Huapangos is a family-run business in the heart of Hillcrest. There's a good chance that your hostess will be the owner's daughter and your waiter will be the owner's son.
As Huapangos approaches 10 years in business, it must be quality food, made with heart, that keeps this Mexican restaurant at the top of the competitive Hillcrest scene.
1st visit last evening w/out of town guests. Great authentic atmosphere inside but we were seated on the patio, which was a perfect evening for that. Large menu so you may want to review prior to arriving. Our server Alex was delightful, personable & attentive. The fresh Lime Margaritas he suggested are a must. A really nice pour of a good tequila. Hit just the right amount of pucker & sweetness. We had to have 2 since the 1st one went down quite quickly.
Apps we ord. GUACAMOLE DIP- Bright & Freshly made. We loved the light puffy chips that accompanied it. QUESO FUNDIDO w/Chorizo is a must for the table to share.
Entrees: SHRIMP ENCHILADA & CHILE RELLENO. Shrimp can sometimes be lost in the sauce/cheese of an enchilada but this dish shined. Perfect texture & taste on the shrimp & a delicious Relleno.
Other guests had POLLO ASADO. She couldn't believe how much great flavor the chicken breast packed.
ENCHILADAS SUIZAS - Chicken Enchiladas topped with Tomatillo Sauce, Lettuce, Sour Cream & Cotija Cheese. Just the right blend of spices within the enchilada.
All the plates were filled w/rice & beans to accompany the entree and quite large.
Sorry others have had not the same experience as we did. We could not have been more pleased. I will be back w/more friends!
For starters, we ordered margaritas on the rocks, and they were perfect- not too sweet and with a long pour of tequila. The complimentary salsa was good, but I loved the queso dip even more. The chips were hard and had a strong maize flavor. I wasn't a fan.
I ordered the chile relleno and tostada combo. The food was ample and delicious; however, the dish was not spicy enough for me. I asked for a side of the salsa casera and that did the trick! My daughter ordered the chimichanga plate and said it was the best.
Huapango's is considered "upscale", which I found odd because the menu is comprised of very traditional Mexican food (tacos, enchiladas, burritos, etc.). Perhaps upscale refers only to prices because they are fairly steep. Total bill excluding tip: $104 for two combination plates, a bean and cheese burrito, a chimichanga, and 4 awesome margaritas.
The combination plates provide plenty of food for 2, sharing one would be a great way to save some money.
The service was outstanding and attentive. I would definitely return if given the opportunity.
First time here my husband wanted to go he thought it would be good and he was right!
We had the ceviche , fish tacos, carne Asada Cesar salad
And two buckets of beer the staff noticed are order and they said we really know how to order
The staff was very very nice
They found out we are from out of town and they gave cute souvenirs.
Over all I would recommend this place and will be back when we are back in town
Good place to eat and have drinks!
I'm giving this restaurant five stars for excellent location and darling patio in the heart of Hillcrest.
Probably the best happy hour I've ever seen....
Nice Decor, wooden floors it's in an older house with a lot of wood accent very authentic-looking the owners of the restaurant live above the restaurant the husband is Persian and the wife is Mexican and the restaurant is excellent I've eaten here about 20 times and I would say it's one of the best places to eat in all of Hillcrest...
Their calamari is perfect their Caesar salad is excellent, they have really good deals on margaritas
.... everything I've eaten here is excellent, they also give you chips and salsa when you come in but then they also give you a cheese dipping sauce with the chips and it's SUPERB.
My wife and I came here on a Tuesday for brunch. We were headed to 'The Tractor Room', but its no longer there... This place serves breakfast all day (last page of the menu). We sat outside close to the corner. It was a beautiful day, both the car and foot traffic were light.
I ordered the huevos rancheros with a bottomless mimosas($10 each). I loved my meal. The rancheros sauce was amazing, I started bringing my potatoes and tortilla over to gobb it all up.
My wife had the chorizo con huevos. She could not finish it, LOTS OF FOOD! She loved their fresh tortillas.
The service was awesome. Carlos (the anchor) was our waiter. We got about five mimosas each during our brunch, never noticed our drinks dry.
This place is great on a Tuesday for brunch.
Very friendly and pleasant staff. Stopped by because my usual place was closed for superbowl, and I was just looking to grab some breakfast and coffee.
Was greeted as soon as I walked in, told to go order at the counter, and then was met by a Very friendly older guy, who I think was the manager. He instantly made me feel welcome as I took a seat to wait for my food.
Ordered a carne asada burrito and a coffee to go, both of which arrived in maybe ten minutes or so, and both of which were very tasty.
Stopped by on a whim, yet I will definitely be coming back!
